Introduction

This piece of work originated in a commission from Derby City Council to research the history of ‘The Firs’ 320 Burton Road Derby, a large Regency-style mansion which has now been converted into flats. With teaching, research and writing commitments, I was not able to devote as much time to the project as I had hoped so that the work is very incomplete. However, it has still produced material of local historical interest. From my initial investigations, I concluded that The Firs is broadly of historical significance for four reasons:

  1. As the residence of the Abney family
  2. From the perspective of architecture and landscape - As a Regency style villa with gardens of significance in terms of architectural and landscaping history in the Derby context. Although, it is not an unusual type of 19thc villa in national or regional terms, it is certainly important in the history of Derby.
  3. Its interior
  4. As an estate on the edge of the Derby borough boundary

I will examine each of these in turn.
