Graduated with an online Computing and IT BSc (Hons)

Which course did you study?

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing and Information Technology top-up

Why did you choose this course?

I already hold a HND in Computing and wanted to convert this to a degree level qualification to potentially further my career. My course had to be flexible and allow me to study outside of business hours and at weekends, as I was in full time employment with the Nova Education Trust as a Trust IT Technician supporting schools with their IT.

What attracted you to online learning?

As a working parent of two children, studying at UDOL allowed me to fit completing a top-up degree around my busy life. It also meant I could complete my studies from any location with an internet connection.

Why did you choose the University of Derby Online Learning?

I chose to study with UDOL over other providers due to the structured nature of the course. The set deadlines allowed me to plan my time, but also kept me motivated to complete the course within 2 years. In addition, the University of Derby offered their onsite services to me to utilise as needed, including their library and offered 1:1 guidance from their course lecturers.

What were your goals and aspirations when starting your course? Have they changed during study?

I left college in 2003 with a HND in Computing and since then have being working in IT. I was concerned at first that being out of education for so long may have meant that I would struggle. My initial goal was just to complete/pass the course, tackling every assignment and module as they came. However, after successfully completing the first couple of modules my goal changed, looking to pursue higher marks.

How did you balance your study around professional/personal commitments?

This was the most difficult aspect of the course for me personally. Sometimes, the last thing you want to do after a full day at work is study. Likewise, with two young children to entertain at weekends, finding valuable study time can be difficult. For me, it was a case of being focused and devoting time to study. I used a combination of staying late at work to study, using my local library and working from home to find the hours required. Between modules there was a bit of breathing time so it wasn’t a constant pressure.

How would you describe your online learning experience at Derby? What did you find particularly beneficial?

Overall my experience at UDOL was very positive. It has allowed me to complete a degree course alongside my other commitments – something which I am very proud of. Having the set module dates allowed me to plan my studies around my life to ensure I could dedicate the required time to each module.

What was your most memorable moment during your time at Derby?

Receiving my first module result – due to the fact it was the first academic assignment I had completed in nearly 15 years, I was worried. But in the end I got a very good mark and surpassed my personal expectations.

How has your qualification helped your career? Has the knowledge you have acquired, complimented previous work experience in any way?

Too early to tell currently – I’m hopeful that it will open new doors in my career. The course has certainly complemented my existing work experience, and also provided me with knowledge in areas of IT that I haven’t experienced in my work place. It has also taught me a lot about time management, self-study, researching etc.

Can you describe your experience with just one word?

What would you say to anyone considering an online course at Derby?

The more time you can dedicate to your studies, the more you will get out of it.
