Graduated with an online Nursing Studies BSc (Hons)
Why did you choose this course?
I wanted to study this course as I am working in an Outreach Clinic and aiming to apply for a Practice Nurse post, for which I wanted to gain a Master’s degree too. This course is a stepping stone to starting my Master’s degree, and having the postgraduate qualification would give me a better chance of securing the Practice Nurse post.
I had been holding back from studying for a number of years for various reasons. Firstly, online courses were not yet available locally, and with being busy most days I never sat down and focused how I could progress in my studies. Once I developed a stronger interest in specialising my career in Urology, I felt the need to continue studying.
What attracted you to online learning?
I have a very busy schedule with both work and personal interests. I currently work in a Urology Outreach clinic which caters for a range of patient needs and I am also working on an independent feature film with a group of local filmmakers. After reviewing this programme I thought I could try and fit the course in my busy schedule instead of delaying the course indefinitely.
Why did you choose the University of Derby Online Learning?
I knew some other nurses starting the degree with UDOL, so I went on the website and looked at the course. I thought it looked really interesting, especially the Ethics and Research module.
How did you balance your study around professional/personal commitments?
It was and still is hard sometimes. I became better at planning and dividing up my time into more manageable pieces. Building time tables and setting deadlines help me keep on track.
How would you describe your online learning experience at Derby? What did you find particularly beneficial?
I was a bit worried during my first two modules, but once I got used to the format of online learning I realised it was surprisingly satisfying to work my way through the course.
What was your most memorable moment during your time at Derby?
I loved my graduation day. The university made us feel special and appreciated.
How has your qualification helped your career? Has the knowledge you have acquired, complimented previous work experience in any way?
It helped me grow in ways I didn't immediately realise. It consolidated my Diploma to adopt a more academic view towards nursing. This led me to finally decide that I wanted to take a higher level degree after completing the BSc.
I am now studying the MSc Integrative Health and Social Care with UDOL, and focusing on finishing this before considering a PhD in health science.
Can you describe your experience with just one word?
What would you say to anyone considering an online course at Derby?
If you are serious about improving your career but afraid that university study is too difficult or intensive for you, please talk to someone that has studied at UDOL. You'll be welcomed and personally led to study in a way that works for you. The tutors are very understanding and appreciate the fact that students have busy professional and personal lives.
