Which course did you study?

MSc in Environmental Management

Why did you choose this course?

I have had an interest in studying geography and environmental studies from a young age. Nowadays, there is more awareness about the crucial importance of maintaining good environmental status and career opportunities in the environmental sector have increased. The modules within the course were also very interesting and practical and I was sure that this course would help me throughout my career.

What attracted you to online learning?

I started my Master’s degree the same year that I finished my undergraduate degree. The biggest advantage of online learning is that it has allowed me to start working and continue studying at the same time.

Why did you choose the University of Derby Online Learning?

I chose UDOL since the MSc Environmental Management course had attracted me the most whilst searching for which Masters to pursue. I was especially encouraged when I saw the case studies of previous students discussing their positive experiences with this University.

What were your goals and aspirations when starting your course? Have they changed during study?

My main goal was to learn practical ways in protecting and managing the environment in a sustainable way. My undergraduate course had a more scientific background and thus, this course was very beneficial in teaching environmental management from a more policy/practical background.

How did you balance your study around professional/personal commitments?

Balancing studying with work and personal life was certainly a challenge, especially during the dissertation. By that time, I was used to making sure I had everything organised and set tasks to be achieved on a day by day basis. I was also lucky to have flexible time at work, which allowed me to shift my priorities according to my deadlines.

How would you describe your online learning experience at Derby? What did you find particularly beneficial?

My experience with UDOL was a positive one. The student portal is very user friendly and allows the student to easily access notes, assignment, instructions and deadlines etc. The live blackboard sessions prior to most assignments were very beneficial in order to further understand the tasks being assigned as well as providing a platform to interact with other students and the lecturer. I also found the Online Learning Advisors to be extremely helpful, especially whilst I was applying for the course.

What was your most memorable moment during your time at Derby?

The graduation ceremony was certainly one of my favourite moments. I travelled with my family to Derby and it was a wonderful ceremony where I had the opportunity to meet the other students that I had been studying with and celebrate our success!

How has your qualification helped your career? Has the knowledge you have acquired, complimented previous work experience in any way?

My Master’s degree has expanded my knowledge on environmental management, which has been particularly helpful since I work as an environmental protection officer. Studying and working at the same time presented several challenges. However, it worked in a beneficial way from both sides since my work provided knowledge from personal experiences/colleagues experiences to discuss in my assignments, and the course provided me with further knowledge to apply during my career.

Can you describe your experience with just one word?

What would you say to anyone considering an online course at Derby?

I encourage other students to take a look at the several courses that UDOL offers and get in touch with the enquiry team in case they have any queries, as they had been extremely helpful whilst I was applying. I have personally encouraged two of my colleagues to pursue their masters in Environmental Management at UDOL, and they are now finishing their degrees.
