Most of our online courses have a standard and maximum length. Our courses are flexible in terms of length of study. If you require more information please email us at onlineadmissions@derby.ac.uk.

Our online courses are also subject to the same intense validation process which scrutinises all proposed courses, to ensure they match up to the high standard of courses that we offer at the University of Derby. Our validation processes are in place to ensure that our courses have the same level of academic rigour as any course you would study across the UK.

All of our online qualifications are worth the same in terms of their credit value as an on-campus degree. Your award will be from The University of Derby and will state the name of the course that you studied – e.g. BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies. There is no reference to the mode of study on your certificate; it is only referred to on the transcript. We advise students to check before enrolling if their qualifications will be accepted in their country.

As with all Higher Education Institutions in the UK, we are required to adhere to Quality Assurance processes that are set out by the UK government. The University of Derby is also subject to reviews from the Higher Education Review at regular intervals. Please read the University of Derby’s official statement which confirms the quality and standards of our online qualifications and their comparability with campus based qualifications.

You will always have a point of contact to support you with both academic and non-academic issues.

From enquiry to enrolment, you will have a dedicated admissions advisor to answer any queries you may have about your course choices or the application process.

From enrolment to graduation, the online learning advisor team can help you with any non-academic issues or queries that you may have.

For any queries regarding your academic studies, you will have a dedicated online tutor and programme lead. These are experts in their subject areas, who can answer any questions you may have regarding the content or assessment of your course.

Online learning involves a combination of tutor discussions, reading, research, online activities and critical thinking and reflection.

We have developed our online courses to be social and collaborative, with plenty of opportunities to network and connect. Module tutors will hold virtual classrooms and seminars for live discussion and open debate, and these will be recorded for you to revisit at a later date. We also encourage you to engage with fellow students through discussion boards, forums, wikis and blogs so you never feel like you’re studying in isolation.

Through your student portal, you can access your virtual learning environment including course resources and study materials, as well as your student email account, grades and more. You’ll also have full access to the university’s range of online services, including the library, student wellbeing and support services, careers advice and IT support.

All of your learning materials and resources are accessible via the web, be that with your PC, Mac or laptop/ notebook, or your mobile device with an internet connection.

At the end of each module you will be expected to submit an assignment.

Once you have enrolled and paid for your course, we will send you a username and password to access your online learning resources and reading lists.

Learning materials will be uploaded by your Senior Online Tutor at the start of term.

If you have all the documentation you need to upload to the application, it should take no more than an hour to complete.

Once you’ve submitted your application, you will immediately receive an email confirming that we have received it. You will typically receive a decision in approximately 5 working days. The decision process may take longer if we request further information from you or your application is referred to the academic for a decision.

The personal statement should no more than 4000 characters (approximately 500 words). You may want to include your reasons for applying for the course, your experience in the field, how you feel you would benefit from studying and relevant information about your previous studies. You could also tell us about your non-academic experiences such as hobbies, interests, participation in any clubs, societies or voluntary work.

All of our academic staff have studied to a high level in their area of expertise, and many also hold higher education teaching qualifications. Several have previously taught on-campus at the University of Derby, and some still teach at other institutions in addition to their duties as academics on our courses. Many also engage in research. Where appropriate, our academics hold membership of recognised professional bodies, such as the Institute of Hospitality, British Psychological Society and the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists. The University of Derby has also been rated as Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in 2017.

Our online programmes are designed to enable you to easily interact with your fellow students.

During your studies you will make use of a number of online communities (discussion boards and forums) along with a Social Hub for all of our online students which will help you share experiences and socialise with students across the world.

Our online courses can be studied from anywhere in the world.

You will need to have a PC, Mac or laptop/ notebook, or your mobile device with an internet connection. At the very least you will need one of the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer
  • Firefox
  • Safari

You can also undertake a browser compatibility test with our virtual learning environment provider.

Our virtual learning environment is tested on a number of devices and operating systems. If you would like to find out more, please visit our supplier’s site.

Other software required:

  • PDF reader files (eg Adobe Acrobat Reader)
  • Microsoft Word (at least Word 2003)
  • Microsoft Excel (at least Excel 2003)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (at least PowerPoint 2003)

We are aware that within some regions of the world the IT infrastructure will not allow access to certain types or sources of media. We make every effort to ensure all our programs and their content are accessible to our students around the globe so no student is at a disadvantage.
