Sugar Drop is the first short film in the Bitter/Sweet Trilogy. Written by author, lecturer and Diabetes sufferer Tom Craig, each film uses a horror narrative in conjunction with an art cinema aesthetic to explore a different facet of Type I Diabetes.
Synopsis
In the winter of 1922 the Indianapolis drug firm Eli Lilly and Company perfected a technique to mass produce large quantities of purified insulin. This breakthrough heralded a revolution in the treatment of Diabetes and saved millions of sufferers worldwide from a slow and painful premature death. Whilst insulin therapy allows patients to live a relatively normal existence, an excess of insulin in the body can lead to a state known as Hypoglycaemia in which the level of glucose in the blood drops dangerously low. Without rapid intervention, this can lead to anxiety, disorientation, hallucinations, unconsciousness and eventually death
Almost ninety years after the perfection of insulin production, university lecturer and Diabetes sufferer Ben Hopewell is, by his own admission, comfortably removed from the horrors faced by previous generations of Diabetics. Effortlessly negotiating a world centred on fatherhood, a fulfilling marriage and a career he still loves, nothing could be further from Ben's mind than the medical condition that has left his existence dependent on an ability to administer a precisely calculated dose of insulin each day
One evening, after deciding to work late, the naivety of his complacency is brought into sickening focus when Ben accidentally miscalculates his dosage only to find himself trapped and alone in a stuck lift. Unable to reach the outside world, Ben's blood sugar levels slowly begin to drop. As the full horror of his situation emerges Ben's desperate pleas for help turn first to rage and then a final attempt to let his family know how much he loves them before unconsciousness and ultimately death overtake him. When anxiety and confusion eventually descends into madness and hallucination, Ben's only comfort is the knowledge that at least things could not get any worse. Until, that is, he realises with chilling clarity that he is not in fact alone in the lift after all...
